In a promising move towards strengthening international relations, President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus has expressed a strong interest in partnering with Nigeria across key economic sectors. This announcement was made during a visit from Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, in the Belarusian capital, Minsk.
Building Stronger Ties
President Lukashenko highlighted specific areas where Belarus is eager to collaborate, such as agriculture, food processing, industry, and education. He emphasized that the First Lady’s visit has reinforced Belarus’s commitment to enhancing bilateral relations, particularly in specialized training.
“We understand your needs and see the significant opportunities available. We are eager to provide substantial assistance, fostering mutual benefits,” Lukashenko said. He also extended an invitation for Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs to visit Belarus to further develop these collaborative efforts.
Educational Exchange and Women’s Empowerment
First Lady Oluremi Tinubu expressed her gratitude for the scholarships awarded to 20 Nigerian students through her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI). She highlighted RHI’s focus on empowering women, particularly through the Women in Agriculture program, which aims to improve food security and agricultural productivity in Nigeria.
“Our initiative is dedicated to uplifting women and ensuring sustainable food production. We are keen to expand our collaboration with Belarus to achieve these goals,” Tinubu said.
Expanding Educational Opportunities
During a meeting with Belarusian Minister of Education Andrey Ivanets, they discussed the approximately 600 Nigerian students currently studying in Belarus. Ivanets praised their academic performance and expressed a desire to formalize a bilateral educational agreement. They also discussed the potential to establish Specialist Training Centers in Nigeria.
Engaging with Parliament and Women’s Union
The First Lady also met with Natalya Kochanova, the Speaker of the Belarusian parliament, and members of the Women’s Union of Belarus. These discussions focused on exchanging strategies to empower women across various professional sectors.

The partnership between Nigeria and Belarus reflects a shared vision for mutual growth and development. As both countries explore collaborative opportunities, the potential for economic, educational, and industrial advancement stands to benefit their populations significantly.
